To now learn that these claims are not true, that even your milk labelled 'organic' is not strictly organic, has been a great shock to me. How free range is free range? In yesterday's edition of 'Top of the Times' (5th September 2014), there was a report on free range eggs and chickens. It is difficult to learn how misleading these claims are. My first and real interest is in the wellbeing of the animals - how they are treated, handled, the way the calves are handled and kept with mother, the lives they live (as close to their natural way of living), followed by the nature and quality of food they are fed. It is a huge shock to realise how far from all of this your farmers are. Humane conditions? Compassionate and ethical farming? I'm now not at all sure, and of course this raises the question of the conditions of your free range poultry.
I would really like to have some responses to these questions. We have land in the southern Cape, and have been told by neighbouring farmers that they supply you with Ayrshire milk. I have seen some of the conditions that these cows live under, and can hardly be called ethical. I am not sure whether they are your suppliers or not.
In the meantime, until I have had a response from you, I will avoid shopping at Woolworths.
